Social Media Marketing – along with traditional marketing seem to have a few common myths that people inherently believe. I’ve tried to break the lemming thought process, but when you are not immersed in the world of Marketing – its easier to believe what you have been told. Here are a few…
Myth 1. Social Media Marketing is FREE. It is certainly free to sign up for Twitter, Linked-In and Facebook, but once you start thinking about the time and effort you put into the cost quickly rises. Think of it this whay – lets say you pay yourself $10/hour – and you blog, tweet etc a total of 2 hours a day every day - you have now spent $560 a month- a potential print ad. We tend to think our of time as free – and it needs to be factored in when putting together our Social Media Marketing plans.
Social Media has been the craze lately – everyone is abuzz with twittering, facebooking and linked-’inning’. (a new verb?? ) However as I teach people all around Austin what social media marketing is – I often ask ‘is it necessary?’
Every time I teach – I ask:
1. Who is your target audience?
2. Where does your target audience live? (and I don’t mean that geographically) – are they in coffee shops, online, visiting retail stores etc.
3. Will spending the time on SMM touch the lives of your customers?
Have you ever started a project with a plan in mind? You’ve researched and thought about it and planned something to turn out ‘just so’ only to find out that what might have been the greatest plan ever – might not have been exactly the correct one? Did you have the humility and flexibility to realize that another plan just might be better? Did you have the courage to admit it and change paths?
The way of the world is changing and so is the way we are marketing products, business and ourselves- and in order to keep ahead of the game and cutting edge, Clear Frog Marketing is becoming SoBuzz Marketing and tackling the world of Social Media.
