Social Media Marketing Myths
Social Media Marketing – along with traditional marketing seem to have a few common myths that people inherently believe. I’ve tried to break the lemming thought process, but when you are not immersed in the world of Marketing – its easier to believe what you have been told. Here are a few…
Myth 1. Social Media Marketing is FREE. It is certainly free to sign up for Twitter, Linked-In and Facebook, but once you start thinking about the time and effort you put into the cost quickly rises. Think of it this whay – lets say you pay yourself $10/hour – and you blog, tweet etc a total of 2 hours a day every day - you have now spent $560 a month- a potential print ad. We tend to think our of time as free – and it needs to be factored in when putting together our Social Media Marketing plans.
Myth 2. All I need to do is (insert social media channel of choice here). I tell my clients it is necessary to master one channel, but that cannot be the end all be all. This needs to be part of a bigger plan, including traditional forms of marketing to build awareness of your online marketing.
Myth 3. The Social Media Marketing Channel doesn’t really matter as long as I stick to it. Part of this statement is true, but it is extremeley important which SMM channel you choose to put your time and effort into. Evaluate who your customers are, get a handle on their psychographics and choose the channel that will reach them best.
Myth 4. The person who dies with the most followers wins! I personally believe that the more you use Twitter as a listening device, the more effective it become. If everyone has 20,000 followers – who is really hearing anything you have to say? Learn about your customers and your competitors by being quiet.
I could go on about the myths that have risen up around social media because its potential is untapped. With the applications and advancements – this is a most exciting time.
I’ll write about more myths in my next post.
