I’m Average – and That is Not a Bad Thing
I’m going to go against my own rules and go off topic today. I’m not going to talk about blogging, social media, small business or marketing.
I want to talk about being AVERAGE.
In my business, I strive every day to be cutting edge, bring unique ideas to the table and be a thought leader – However, there are thousands of other people who have that same goal. So I’m really not very special, I’m pretty AVERAGE.
I just read an article by Seth Godin that asked the question – are you indispensable? The easy answer would say “of course, we can all be replaced” – at least that is what corporate america would like to have you believe – but its more than that. We were all made individually with a unique set of gifts and talents and its up to us to find out how those are mixed together and then blend it with our passion and that is when we live a ‘LegacyLife’tm.
I got a fortune cookie the other day that said ‘ you have a bigger effect on people than you think’ – now….that could be taken either way. I could be one of those people that leaves a wake of hurt and burnt people behind – but I’d rather be the one that has touched someone’s life for the better. How would you translate that? It was the first fortune cookie that made ME think….thanks Happy Dragon!
But some of us could take it as something like - oh, I”m not in Haiti saving people’s lives – I’m just average and therfore not noteworthy – but I’m going to challenge you on that. What would happen if all of the world dropped everything and flew to Haiti….
yup….A bigger mess
We need average people – and I mean that in the most extraordinary way. We need people to stay at home and raise their kids well, help others do their finances so we don’t lose our homes, to council us in the hard times, teach us new things so we are continually growing, listen to our friends because they need us. These things may seem average things to you, but to me, people like this have a ‘bigger effect than they think’.
So I guess my thought for today is – don’t equate the word average with bad – thing about how your average can be you and what type of legacy YOU leave.
